My last post had more of a serious tone. I thought it would be nice to publish a post that is a bit more lighthearted. So, naturally, ‘how to take a selfie’ was the first thing that came to mind. In this post I give a few tips on what you must do in order to capture the perfect selfie so that you can grace all your Instagram followers with your perfect selfie-taking skills. Trust me, you won’t regret reading this one.

Taking a selfie can be hard work. Take it from me; I’ve had my share of selfies and I absolutely love taking them, but there are so many factors that go into capturing the perfect one. One of the main priorities one is tasked with in order to get the perfect selfie is by having the right lighting. Tip: when looking for the perfect lighting, make sure you FACE the light instead of having the light as the background. Your best kind of lighting will be natural. Try facing a window while assuming the selfie position.

Lets face it, selfies are ‘cool’ and everyone is doing it so why not try it out for yourself? (WARNING: may become obsessed with taking selfies after first attempts)! If you’re in the sharing mood you could  try an ‘usie.’img_1307

Below are some additional tips to keep your selfie game on point as told by whowhatwear.com:

  • The universally flattering selfie angle: Hold the camera above eye level and turn your face at a three-quarter angle. *a little to the left… No bring your face down just a tad… Ahhhh perfect; snaps picture*

  • Post a humorous or silly selfie every once and awhile to break up all those ‘resting bitch face’ selfies. *scrolls through Chrissy Teigan’s Insta feed for inspo*

  • The BEST selfie lighting is found in an airport bathrooms. Who woulda thought?! Of course, selfie queen in the flesh, Kim K, coined that concept. *Because you know, we’re ALL traveling soooooo much around the world; cues eye roll*

  • Photos that use the Mayfair filter generate the most likes *hmmm cue #nofilter* Please, if you feel the need to post that hashtag, were on to you… We know you’re lying lol

lumee case

  • Lastly, another insider tip on landing the best selfies is the Lumee phone case featuring LED lights so you always have great lighting no matter where you are. Literally life changing!

Danzarrella breaks it down for us and gives us the ‘Science of Selfies.’ I bet you didn’t know that the act of taking selfies have caused more deaths than shark attacks according to BGR. Crazzzyyyy, right?! The next time you take a selfie, please be careful!

The Colourpop craze on YouTube is in full throttle and I don’t think it will ever end. Colourpop cosmetics is a makeup brand based in L.A. and they’re known for their very pigmented makeup products. Not only is the color pay off great, they’re affordable too. With their lippie sticks and eyeshadows starting at $5 you’ll be sure to make a statement at a great price!

I was inspired by Alyra’s latest makeup look on YouTube. To see how Kyra did it, click here. They are a sister duo who’s channel is based on lifestyle and more importantly their makeup looks and tutorials geared towards woman of color. Of course, if you are not a woman of color, you can pull this look off too! However, the contrast between dark skin and the blue hues makes the colours POP ;). I hope you enjoy this blog tutorial as much as I enjoyed creating this look.

This look is definitely not for the faint of heart, so if you’re a bold kind of gal, go for it! But if you’re a bit more timid in trying these colors out, try using one of the blue shades on the lower lash line. Better yet, try using one of the colors as an eyeliner to make a statement and stand out from the crowd!

Products Used:

I used Ardell Demi Wispie false eyelashes to complete the look and give my upper lash line a fuller look.

For those who are not familiar with the brand Anastasia Beverly Hills, it’s a brand that started off its very humble beginnings with beauty products targeted specifically to the brows. Now that the brand has been around since 1997, the founder, Anastasia, is known as The Beauty Innovator, and for good reason. She has changed the way women around the world do their makeup. When I first heard about her products, I’m not going to lie, I was a bit skeptical. I always told myself that I already had full-brows, but her products enhance what you already have, just like any other makeup product should do. Once she launched her brow salons in Beverly Hills, she started to gain in popularity with celebrities such as the Kardashians and Makeup Artists globally, she then extended her line to lipsticks, lip stains, eye shadows, and, of course, brow enhancers and definers.

Since the beginning, there has been a few limited edition palettes that she has put out, including her most recent, the ‘Self Made’ palette; a limited edition, fashion-forward eye shadow kit. It basically is the ultimate makeup artists’ palette. It includes fourteen shades–ranging from a neutral beige to a galaxy black. The colors are unique and deliver intense opacity so that you can create an endless array of custom looks.

Swatches of all 14 shades in the ‘Self Made’ palette.

One of the many reasons why I love this palette so much is that it is great for individuals of color. It is obviously great for anyone with a lighter to medium skin tone; however I have found it rather difficult to find palettes with great transition shades for darker skin in the past.  With this palette, I don’t have that issue (hot chocolate is EVERYTHING).

Tutorial featuring the Anastasia Beverly Hills Palette

The feature of this look is the Anastasia Beverly Hills (ABH) ‘Self Made’ palette. Colors used are pink champagne, down brown (MAC), hot chocolate, and treasure. The soft warm tones look sweet on the crease while the metallic touch on the lid adds a little somethin’ somethin’. Bold lashes elevate the look for just about any occasion. Hope you enjoy my photo tutorial! Stay tuned for future looks. Follow me on Instagram for more beauty-related posts!

Brushes and Tools Used:

Step 1: Prime the eyes

Use Urban Decay’s Primer potion in Original. It has been my tried and true for as long as I can remember. Simply use your fingers to apply the product to your upper and lower lash lines for longevity and more opaqueness of the shadows on your lid.

Start off with clean bare skin.

Apply a primer to the upper and lower lash lines.

Step 2: The Transition Color

To get that professional makeup artist gradient-like effect on your lid, a transition color is essential and the first color you apply to your lid (unless you apply a stark white to the lid for even more opaqueness and to cancel out any discoloration or veins on the lids-generally more for bright colors like blues or yellows).

Pictures above Hot Chocolate and Down Brown applied to the crease and outer “V”

I like to use ‘hot chocolate’ in the palette to set the ground work for the other colors I layer on top. I use my Sigma E40 brush and apply the color in a sweeping motion in the crease.

Step 3: Creating more Depth in Outer “V”

To create more depth or “shadow” on the lid, you want to take a small tapered blending brush like the Sigma E45 and place a deeper color like MAC’s ‘down brown’ to the outer “V” of the eye (this is the outer most portion of your eyelid). Apply the color in a patting motion, at first. Once most of the color is distributed from the brush to the outer v, begin a swiping motion with the brush, but only taking the color to the middle of the crease and bringing the color to the middle of your lash line (where you would apply eyeliner). Remember to stay consistent with the “V” shape.

Step 4: Inner and Middle lid color

Two-thirds of your lid should be covered by the colors ‘down brown’ and ‘hot chocolate’ it’s time to add the inner and middle lid color. First, wet a shader brush, similar to Sigma’s E55 brush, with water or setting spray like Urban Decay’s All Nighter Spray. This technique is used so that once the shadow color is picked up and applied, it created more of a metallic look versus applying the shadow dry. It just gives a greater brilliance while on the lid.

Take the color ‘pink champagne’ and apply it on the rest of your lid (inner and middle and a part of the outer. You then want to go back in with ‘hot chocolate’ and a small tapered blending brush to blend out any harsh lines from application of ‘pink champagne.’

Pat Pink Champagne on the inner and middle lid for maximum color payoff.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Finish this look off with some liner and false eyelashes!

Use a pencil brush and place Treasure in the inner corner for a highlight to open the eyes.

There you have it, folks! This look can be worn on an everyday basis or for a special occasion! There are an infinite amount of looks that can be created with this palette. Stay tuned for more looks from this palette!

If you don’t know, I made the decision (and was somewhat recruited) to work at Sephora. I have been a life-long customer (more so window shopper) of Sephora, since I have been in college. Not only does it feed my creative side, but I get to help women, just like me, figure out the answers to their beauty questions.

The experience has been so rewarding and I am so fortunate to be able to live out my life-long dream of working for a place that I am so passionate about. With that I wanted to give some tips and tricks for someone who would like to go into a Sephora, but is intimidated. Also, I wanted to share my experience and what I have learned thus far.

So, I do not work in a stand-alone Sephora. I actually work in a Sephora inside JCPenney. Sephora began its start in JCPenney in October of 2006 and there are about 485 JCPenney stores across the country. The idea behind it is to create smaller footprint that would bring in a different niche group of individuals who would normally not shop in a stand-alone Sephora. So, here are some tips and things that I have learned since working there in October:

Tip #1: Get yourself a makeover

Did you know that Sephora does makeovers? There are two different kinds of makeovers; a full-face makeover (including skincare) and a mini makeover. What’s the difference you ask? Well, a full-face makeover is exactly what it sounds like; but there is a minimum purchase of $50, which is just like any other makeup counter in a department store.

An associate will get you set up, whether it be for a night out with your girls, a holiday party, or to just get your make-up done for the heck of it, that’s fine with us! No judgement here.

Tip #2: We offer samples

For many, forking out $40 on a foundation or $80 on a skincare mask can be a lot for some. Which is why we offer free samples to whomever asks. How else will you know how you like the product if you don’t try it? It’s like the motto “gotta test drive it before you buy it.” That’s the same deal at Sephora. We understand that it can be much and trying it out before you buy it will make you a life-long customer.

Tip #3: Skincare is EVERYTHING

I knew this before working at Sephora, but working here just verified how important skincare is, especially since I go into work with a full face of makeup on. If you do not have a skincare regime down, I would suggest getting one. The main things that will be essential for youthful and vibrant skin are; makeup remover wipes, cleanser, serum, moisterizer and an eyecream. Not only does having a sound skincare regime help with clearing up acne, but it also will be a preventative measure taken to avoid any fine lines or wrinkles, so start NOW. Your older self will thank you later.

In addition, there are so many women that come into the Sephora inside JCPenney and ask for a foundation to cover blemishes or cystic acne, and I hate to say this, but putting on a full-cover foundation is going to be the opposite you want to do to your skin. Also, when you take care of skin, your makeup will look that much better when you where. And if you do have problem skin and have a skincare regime always remember that changes will NOT happen over night. It take a couple months for your skin to adapt to the new products being applied to your skin. So, be patient. You’ll have vibrant, glowy skin in no time 🙂

Did I say Clarisonic? That’s right, a Clarisonic is the solution to all your skincare problems. It’s a rotating brush (oscillates) and it’s  made by the same makers of the Sonicare toothbrush. It gives your skin optimal cleansing for any of your problems whether it be acne, oily skin or uneven skin tone. According to the clarisonic website, it helps with with closing large pores, increases the radiance, helps avoid aging of the skin, and brightens. Not to mention it feels like you’re going to a spa every time you use it. It is literally, amazing. I can’t say enough good things about it.

They run anywhere from $150 to $200 and they even have a version for men called the Alpha Fit Cleansing System. My managers say, “It’s the literally the best thing you could do for your skin.” And they’re right, it’s amazing!

Men's Alpha Fit

Tip #5: Sanitation is key

There is blue makeup remover and alcohol strategically placed around every Sephora including the Sephora’s inside JCPenney’s. It’s important when trying out lip colors that you sanitize the product, first, with a tissue and alcohol so that you can avoid the consequences.

Tip #6: Become a Beauty Insider

A ‘beauty insider’ is the rewards program associated with Sephora. With every dollar that you spend, you receive points which in turn can be used to redeem for free stuff with each purchase.

Depending on how much you purchase during a calendar year, you could become a VIB (very important beauty insider-2nd tier) or become a part of the VIB Rouge (3rd tier). There are few perks for each which include sneak peak of new products coming out, discount codes and free makeovers. Being a beauty insider is just the start of something beautiful 😉 I’m sure you want a free gift every year on your birthday, too. You only can get that if you sign up for the rewards program!

The holidays are right around the corner! As I type this, I feel like that little girl that anticipated ‘Santa Clause and his reindeer’ to make there rounds to my house. Now that I am 23, I get somewhat of the same feeling, but my hopes of Santa and his reindeer stopping by have somewhat diminished; although I still get a glimmer of optimism that there could be some jolly old man with flying reindeer able to get around on a sleigh in 24-hours, I digress. Now that I get to be Santa these days, I get giddy with excitement in the same way that I did when I was younger, but for the loved ones in my life. From the boyfriend, to brothers, momma and daddy, and my teammates and close friends from college (the list seriously goes on; if I see something in the store that reminds me of someone, I get it)– probably not one of my best financial practices, but, hey, that’s what Christmas is all about, right?

These are just a few of the things I have been keeping my eye out for, check out my “Wishlist Website” here.

I carefully compiled a list of material goods that I would love to unwrap from under the tree on Christmas day. In doing that, this may also give you ideas of what to get the special lady in your life. I will be following this post with a gift guide for the special man in your life. I hope you enjoy and let me know what you’ve asked for from Santa ;). Happy Holidays!
